5 Materials We Already Have That Can Substitute Plastic

Weekly Catalogue: March 25th, 2025

Have you tuned into our Plastics Season of Hotel Earth Podcast yet? Well, in light of the subject – we’ve decided to put together a small list of already-existing materials that we can easily swap out for plastic.

1. Aluminum

Aluminum is 100% recyclable without losing it’s properties, and the production process for recycled aluminum takes 95% less energy than making new material. Contrarily, majority of plastics are either not recyclable or lose their quality with each recycling cycle.

2. Stainless steel

Stainless steel can replace plastic in various ways: food storage, water bottles, cosmetic packaging, packaging for cleaning products and other household items, etc. It’s durable and made to last – sans the toxicity of plastic.

3. Glass

Same as above.

4. Organic cotton

Cotton can replace a lot of the plastic we use in clothing and textile fibers. Bye-bye nylon and polyester.

5. Bamboo / other natural fibers

Bamboo, hemp, and algae-based materials are on the rise! These can be used as natural food preserving materials to replace plastics in Tupperware or cling-wrap, but also in textiles and clothing. They have a low carbon footprint and are completely biodegradable. Plus: bamboo has natural anti-bacterial properties. Pretty cool.

Let us know if you make any swaps! Check back next week for a new Weekly Catalogue.
